The Weekend Trap

How to enjoy Friday night through Sunday without accidentally undoing the deficit you created Monday through Thursday.

This isn't about shaming weekend eating. You're allowed to enjoy your weekend. It just helps to see how the math works across a whole week instead of one day at a time.

You keep about 33% of the deficit you built during the week.

Nudging the weekend number down slightly is usually far easier — and far more sustainable — than slashing your weekday calories further.

Strategies that actually work

  • Look at the restaurant menu before you leave home.
  • Don't starve yourself all day to “save calories” for dinner.
  • Prioritize protein earlier in the day.
  • If you want flexibility for a bigger meal, make modest adjustments to earlier meals instead of skipping them.
  • Decide what is actually worth splurging on.
  • Choose between appetizers, drinks and dessert rather than automatically having all three.
  • Order before the table's choices sway you, if you already know what you want.
  • Ask for sauces and dressings on the side when you want more control.
  • Remember liquid calories count too.
  • Order the food you actually want — ordering “perfectly” and then snacking later because you weren't satisfied is worse.
  • Keep your usual movement if it feels good, but never use exercise to earn or erase a meal.
  • Get back to your normal routine at the next meal — not next Monday.

One meal didn't ruin your progress.

Turning one meal into a three-day “I'll start again Monday” spiral is what makes consistency hard.
